K-12 U.S. STATISTICAL HIGHLIGHTS

This graphic reflects actual student reports, the real number of victims in each category is estimated much higher as many victims are reluctant to file reports.

Unchecked, each of these problems create other issues, including but not limited to the following:

  • 160,000 students skip school every day to avoid their bully. (US Dept of Justice)
  • 60% of male bullies are later convicted of one crime by 24, and 40% of those had more than three convictions. (National Crime Prevention Council)
  • 4,600 suicides occur annually in 10-24 age group. (CDC.gov)
  • 157,000 suicide attempts in 10-24 age are treated in ERs annually. (CDC.gov)

Schools face additional threats:

These serious threats include tornadoes, hurricanes, drugs and gang violence, just to name a few. The StaySAFER Network is a unique All-Hazards Emergency & Risk Management platform that is feature rich and includes all the tools that, historically, have proven to be necessary for success before, during and after an emergency.

The StaySAFER Network supports recommendations from many sources, including the following:

  • "K-12 School Security: A Guide For Preventing And Protecting Against Gun Violence" – published by the US Department of Homeland Security. It can be found here.
  • "Enhancing School Safety Using A Threat Assessment Model – An Operational Guide For Preventing Targeted School Violence" published by the National Threat Assessment Center. This guide was prepared by the US Secret Service, the US Department of Education and other partners. It can be found here.
  • "School And Firearm Safety Action Plan" released by Texas Governor Abbott after numerous round tables with survivors, industry experts following the May 18, 2018 Santa Fe High School shooting in Santa Fe, Texas. It can be found here.

StaySAFER FEATURES SUPPORT MULTIPLE RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Central Reporting Tool:

Any sexual harassment and abuse, bullying, etc. will immediately decline as it becomes clear that any witness – student, teacher, staff, parent, vendor, anyone – can quickly and easily report any suspicious actions and/or situations. This drastically increases the likelihood of discovery. Once reported, schools have the opportunity to intervene prior to actual sexual attacks, violence and escalation, loss of support, and additional brand damage. Remember, 81% of school shooting and other on-site violence plans were known by others prior to the attack. See Intelligence for more information.

  • Central Recognition Tool:

Deserved positive reinforcement is an effective methods of improving mental health, increasing productivity and success. Building a strong community of courtesy and cooperation will reduce bullying and violence, increase attendance and provide a healthy 15 “minutes of fame” that so many youths crave. See Intelligence for more information.

  • Multidisciplinary Teams:

Multidisciplinary Threat Assessment Team, School Safety & Security Committees, Grief and other Trauma Counselors, First Responders and similar are also frequently recommended. These typically include community individuals who will assist the school in managing the safer school programs. This team may also manage reports (see Intelligence feature above) and assist in the develop and implementation of intervention and management strategies to mitigate any risk of harm. Increased success occurs when including those people who need to know now; who need to prevent before; who need to act after; who are trained to help during. Access the right people at the right time, 24/7/365. See People and Communication for more information.

  • Response, Mitigation & Continuity of Operations:

Universal, secure access to the files, equipment and other resources necessary to prevent, respond or mitigate any man-made or natural disasters that do happen. Emergency Response Plans, Blueprints, Drills, Audits, Mutual Aid Agreements and other options are accepted industry standards for educational campuses. See Stuff for more information.

YHD's StaySAFER Network has been recognized by the Secretary of US Department of Homeland Security and the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation as “desperately needed” and “outstanding assistance to investigative efforts.”

The StaySAFER Network has many unique features including a consistent process for handling reports – without prejudice, politics or favoritism – from collection to resolution. Furthermore, StaySAFER offers both organizational and independent oversight. This enables schools and related units to manage issues with their local knowledge independently while benefiting from District and independent oversight to ensure that policies and procedures are followed consistently and correctly.

Safer and more secure campuses are necessary for students to achieve their academic goals. The StaySAFER Network is a force-multiplier solution that maximizes the value of your existing personnel and resources while supporting the integration of new partners from the community and safety subject matter experts.
